I filmed this video at the hotel where I spent the night in Miami.

The video does not give detailed information about the book but seeks instead to suggest some of the areas of special interest.

Some thoughts and suggests about the midterm examination.

You can take this examination between Wednesday, November 22, early morning and Tuesday, November 29 at midnight, which will give you plenty of time to review the material.

Part One of the exam requires that you respond to six prompts from a pool of approximately sixteen prompts provided; I discuss all sixteen briefly in the video. For each of the prompts, as the video suggests, you want to write six to eight sentences, addressing the significance of the prompt in terms of the issues covered in the story--but also highlighted in the class thus far.

Part Two of the exam asks that you write an essay about either In the Country of Men or Harp of Burma. You will have a choice, and I discuss these choices in the video.

This video, however, does not talk about In the Country of Men but rather the novel previously used. Time permitting I will create a new video.

For purposes of an essay, however, just consider the significance of the mother's role and her conflicts--another area of interest for you to think about concerns the important role both loyalty and betrayal play in the young boy's experience.

If you study both these areas and what the video has to say about the other novel, you will do just fine.

You will have approximately 90 minutes to complete Part One and must complete the examination once you begin.

For Part Two, you can write your essay, approximately two double-spaced pages, and paste it into the space provided--I suggest, however, that you type in your responses, for this practice will improve your essay.

Make sure to use paragraphs.

Watch the video and do a good job on the examination.

This video will help you prepare for the two quizzes--each offers fifteen questions over the reading. And the review covers all the material the quizzes address. Do a good job and keep up with the reading.

Quizzes ONE And TWO

The sixteen-week class (on campus) will take two quizzes every two weeks; the on-line class will take two quizzes every week.

The video, as always, covers the material the quizzes address, which covers all the assigned.

As a general rule, the quizzes will be available late Thursday morning until midnight Sunday. This week, the quizzes will remain open until Midnight Monday because I did not get the quiz completed until Friday morning.

Read the class notes and the assignments; with the help of the video, you should do a fine job.

Hello Everyone,

Read this week's announcement carefully, for you want to bear in mind the specific dates for turning in course material and for taking both parts of the final examination that will run from Tuesday until midnight Friday.

Thank you very much for your efforts to keep up with this demanding schedule.

This week's video covers the work for the final week of the term. I address in the 27 minutes all the prompts for Part One of the Final Examination and discuss briefly Part Two, your essay (750 words).

Listen carefully, for you want to do a good job on both parts of the examination. Read carefully the instructions; you will find the exam in the Assignment Folder for Week Eight.

Make sure to watch the review video for the final quizzes of the term that will be available Tuesday evening.

The second video, one about Potiki, follows the photograph and will become available Tuesday evening.

Hello Everyone,

On this new (Fall 2011) video, I talk about this week's readings--immigrant literature about Japanese and Chinese in North America, and a story about Caribbean immigrants adjusting to life in London; and we read a story and a poem from Australia; among other things, I also address briefly your final examination.

Take a look at the videos over Whale Rider: Part One and Part Two, a novel from New Zealand I used these past few years. You will not be asked on a quiz about this novel that got turned into a fine film.

I also posted a video to help you do a good job on the quizzes for this week--and I will replace this quiz before Thursday.

This week's readings continue with Latin America and emphasize literature from the Caribbean; the readings include work by three winners of the Nobel Prize for literature, Octavia Butler (Mexico), V. S. Naipaul, (Trinidad), and Derek Walcott, (St. Lucia).

Hello Everyone, This brief video (around 30 minutes) offers a quick look at the second half of Beka Lamb, focusing on some of the more significant aspects of the novel.

The discussion touches on some of the specific events in Beka's life and discusses the novel's central concerns in terms of what Beka experiences.

The talk does not, however, give details enough to replace a close reading of the novel but does reinforce some of the areas of special concern. Enjoy the remainder of the novel.

As the Class Introduction notes, and as I mention in this short Greetings for Week One (For the first two weeks of the face-to-face class), the Weekly Greeting, I will create new videos this term for much of the class, the face-to-face class and the on-line class for this term, Fall 2010, and now again for Fall 2011

Hello Everyone, Today we begin the first of eight weeks of Nonwestern Literature, an exciting ride, and I welcome all of you.

You have two videos here, with the newest one coming first. On the video I talk a bit about shopkeeping and devote the remainder of the time to this week's reading, especially the first three chapters of In the Country of Men, a new novel for this term.

I take Discussion Threads seriously, so read carefully the requirements: at least three multi-sentence responses for each of the two threads--and do not wait until the conclusion of the week when many often post instead of discuss.

Begin the threads early and return often to the discussions.

I also add links here to which you can refer throughout the term.

I wish everyone an excellent start this term.
