Congratulations: We Hit Week EIGHT

Hello Everyone,

Read this week's announcement carefully, for you want to bear in mind the specific dates for turning in course material and for taking both parts of the final examination that will run from Tuesday until midnight Saturday--but you should make an effort to complete the examination by Friday.

Thank you very much for your efforts to keep up with this demanding schedule.

To get all the prompts for the examination and a comprehensive study guide, just list to the welcome video for last week, Week Seven.

Listen carefully, for you want to do a good job on both parts of the examination. Read carefully the instructions; you will find the exam in the Assignment Folder for Week Eight.

Make sure to watch the review video for the final quiz of the term.

The second video, one about Potiki, seems to have gone belly up.  I talk more about the novel, however,  in the Review for Week 8  Quiz Video.

Greetings for Week Eight:

Greetings for Week Seven

Hello Everyone,

On this video, I talk about this week's readings-
-I also address your final examination, the special presentations, and this week's reading.  Make sure to listen carefully to the video, for the information will help you study well for the final examination.

In addition to a greeting and a quiz review, you will also find here a video about the first parts of a novel from New Zealand by Patricia Grace, author of "And So I Go."

Take a look at the videos over Whale Rider: Part One and Part Two, a novel from New Zealand I used these past few years. You will not be asked on a quiz about this novel that got turned into a fine film.

Greetings for Week Seven; pay no attention to dates mentioned, for the video comes from last year:

Potiki Part One, a brief discussion of the novel and some important areas of focus:

Whale Rider Part One

Greetings One and All,

This brief--30 minutes--video covers the first dozen or so chapters of Whale Rider.

I attempt here to touch on essential themes the novel addresses, from the role of the mythic voice to contemporary challenges the Maori face.

The discussion should help with the discussion thread over the novel and with those who decide to write about the novel for the final examination.

Go well, Bill

WEEK SIX GREETINGS

Hello to all keep up with the demanding schedule.

This week's readings continue with Latin America and emphasize literature from the Caribbean.

You will work over these two weeks to complete Hodge's delightfully challenging novel.

As the Weekly Greeting indicates, you want to give serious thought to your Special Project about which I talk again in this week's greetings.

Read carefully this week's announcements.

I posed a new  greeting for Week Six and a new video for this week's quiz--you will find both of them published here.

Make sure, as well, to make use of the class notes, for you will find the information of good use.

Give the videos for Beka Lamb your attention if you would like to use this novel for your special project:

Part Two

Enjoy this week's readings.  I will make a new quiz video after adding more questions about Hodge's book; I will alert you when the quiz becomes ready for your viewing.

BEKA LAMB PART TWO

Hello Everyone, This brief video (around 30 minutes) offers a quick look at the second half of Beka Lamb, focusing on some of the more significant aspects of the novel.

The discussion touches on some of the specific events in Beka's life and discusses the novel's central concerns in terms of what Beka experiences.

The talk does not, however, give details enough to replace a close reading of the novel but does reinforce some of the areas of special concern. Enjoy the remainder of the novel.

I will try to make at least a couple videos on this engaging novel. This video focuses on the novel's first seventy pages.

Enjoy the reading, Bill

GREETINGS FOR WEEK FIVE

Hello Everyone,

Read carefully this week's announcement, which contains important information and links.  If you find any confusion with the dates for the examinations and the Oral Project (end of the term), please let me know right away.

Enjoy the first few chapters of Merle Hodge's novel about a young girl's coming to age in Trinidad

The week of March 27, you will take Quiz Five and should, as always, watch the review video before you take the quizzes.  This quiz will remain open until Tuesday.

We move now to South and Central America and the Caribbean as we continue our literary globetrotting.

Enjoy a week of diverse literature.

On the blog page for the ICCL conference in Panama, you will also find links for conference trips to St. Lucia (Derrick Walcot video), Trinidad (Earl Lovelace video), Cuba, and, most recently, Panama. I will create a page for Curacao you might find interesting.

WEEK FOUR GREETINGS

Hello Everyone,

We near the half-way mark in the term, hard to believe, I know; and, as usual, a good deal of reading awaits you.

You have
notes to which you want to refer, for they will help you with the discussion threads and you upcoming midterm examination.

Pace yourself.  And, again, you have notes for a few readings not assigned for the class.  You are always welcome to read more than required.

I will work to get your papers back over this week and into the weekend.  Thank you for your patience.

Enjoy a productive week, Bill

GREETINGS FOR WEEK THREE

I will change the videos for this week for the Fall 2013 Class, beginning with an introduction to the week's reading and a video  for the quizzes.

You might also enjoy looking a photographs from North Africa, for I spent two weeks this past summer in Tetouan, Morocco.  Actually, my wife and I spent a couple weeks in Morocco for the past two summers.

The blog page at this link includes links to the other blog entries.

Remember that I made these two videos last fall when I changed the class a good deal--so do not get confused with dates.
